Biradome

This small kanzashi is worn by maiko who are on duty: they wear oshiroi and a hikizuri and are ready to go off to an ozashiki. Though a maiko may also wear a similar kanzashi when she is off-duty, when is ready for business she will wear this kanzashi on the right of her head (when she is off-duty, she wears it on the left: find those kanzashi here).

Biradome are just smaller, usually metal flowers or such that maiko wear above their bira. In the real life hanamachi of Gion Kobu (Kyoto), the maiko who are under the age of 18 wear a distinguishinging biradome that looks like the mon (emblem) of that hanamachi. After they reach their majority, the maiko there wear normal biradome like everyone else. Biradome have a more "modern" design and are usually made of swarovski crystals, silver and/or gold. They usually don't contain precious gems like other kanzashi or obidome, but are looking cute nonetheless.

In some cases, sisters or friends will wear similar biradome to represent the link between them.
