Bamileke Collection
Kings and Chiefs of the Bamileke People, from the Cameroon Grasslands, defined their importance and power by displaying objects of value and prestige. These objects were embellished with various mythical motifs often denoting power, spiritual favor or protection. Items, such as stools, were carved from a single piece of wood demonstrating the Bamileke's amazingly intricate carving skills.
One of the most important motifs often carved into these objects were human heads . The Bamileke Series is my attempt to pay homage to these skilled artisans by recreating a head motif wearing a type of hat worn by Bamileke men called an Ashetu. Enjoy!
