The Arraiolos tapestry has its roots in the time when the south of Portugal was an Arab domain. For centuries this kind of tapestry was a local activity done only for the use of the people in the region. The main centre of this activity was the beautiful village of Arraiolos. Only in the XVII century did the European and Portuguese nobility discover the Arraiolos Rugs as a valuable and cosy piece of decoration for their palaces.
