A framed painting by Marc Chagall entitled "I and the Village".

Marc Zaharovich Chagall (6 July 1887 to 28 March 1985) was a Russian artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist, and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. According to Cogniat, in all Chagalls work during all stages of his life, it was his colors which attracted and captured the viewers attention. Chagall biographer Jackie Wullschlager terms Chagall a pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters who invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the twentieth century.
