This ribbon is made to be worn with the Chu Shimada which is worn by the senior maiko and geiko performing in the Miyako Odori group dance and orchestra.

Senior maiko and geiko wear this ribbon both on-duty and off-duty. An on-duty maiko will wear it in combination with hanakanzashi and / or a comb. Geiko though, seeing they normally wear wigs instead of styling their own hair, erase part of their white facial makeup to make the difference between them and maiko more clear.
