Nezashi are worn on the right side of the wareshinobu or ofuku hairstyle for maiko, while the tama kanzashi is worn on the left.
Junior maiko are only allowed to wear a tachibana nezashi, which consists of several small balls and leaves, while senior maiko wear different nezashi called "Hirauchi". Oftentimes, these are made to look like the mon of the okiya the maiko belongs to, or a general flower or decoration.
All maiko wear formal "Bekkou" nezashi (made of tortoiseshell or plastic) on formal ocassions like Hassaku and Shigyoushiki.
