Some legends claim that the dark elves subsist solely upon sorcery and hatred, but such legends are false. Drow eat and drink like all mortal creatures. Likewise, they share other requirements that arise directly from the need to consume and digest solid food. While some enclaves may dispose of the resulting biproduct by sorcery, other dark elven cities divert it as fertilizer for fungus plantations or more strangely still as an offering demanded by the foul beings with which they ally themselves in return for strange, unnatural powers.

In either case, matter must be collected and then channelled to where it is required, in conduits such as this.
