The blacksmith with the puppy dog eyes watched the fair maiden from afar, watching her struggle with her everyday life. Though she was beautiful, she was very clumsy. People watched and laughed as she tripped over the uneven paths, which caused her to rarely smile. How she yearned for a kind heart to accompany her, but the blacksmith did not know this. He was far too shy to even let her gem-like eyes look at him let alone speak to her. Her voice alone could paralyze him, for it was the most sweetest music he had ever heard. There was nothing he had that would win her heart, he thought, but little did he know, a bit of kindness was more than enough to her. One day he decided to face his fear of rejection and confess his love to the fair maiden. But what could he give to her? He was only a poor man. He pondered for days, and thought she was as beautiful as a flower, but a flower she cannot cherish forever. He looked around his shop, saw nothing but his treasured silver figurines given to him as token of his hard work, and a few coins when an idea hit him. A rose, he thought, was the perfect way to say I love you. He melted the little money he had and his figurines and slaved away for several days. Finally, he finished a beautiful metal rose.

He peered out into the market where he saw the fair maiden. She was over by the flower stand. Brilliant, he thought, now comes the courage. Nearby people called to her, poking fun at the clumsy girl as they pushed her around. This outraged the blacksmith and he stormed off to help her. They gave her one last shove before going away that finally made her lose her balance. The blacksmith caught her just in time and looked into her eyes. For the first time, she smiled. The blacksmith smiled back and sat her up before handing her his gift.

“For you, milady, only this one won't die on you” he said, which made her smile more. Somehow he knew that she knew he meant his heart came with it too.
