"The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! The Internet Radio Equality Act has recently been introduced in both the House (H.R. 2060) and Senate (S. 1353) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your senators and your representative to ask them to co-sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act..."

Internet Radio Stations like Digitally Imported, which is my favourite station (I love dance music!) http://www.di.fm/ (link) would basically go bankrupt in an instant. For every 1 dollar they make they have to pay 5 dollars, that is basically more than their combined revenue from the very beginning of their business. The cost they incur - when the new royalties go into effect in about a month, retroactive to Jan 1 2006, will effectively bankrupt them.

As an international listener of many of the Internet radio stations listed on www.shoutcast.com - many of the most popular Internet radio stations are just weeks away from being closed down. Besides listeners and businesses, this will be a big blow to for many up-and-coming artists who wanted to be featured on these Internet for maximum exposure.

“If the goal is to help musicians earn a decent living, raising the internet royalty rates will likely have an adverse effect, as ironic as that sounds.” – the Alexis Harte Band - Quoted from http://www.savenetradio.org/
