The term was introduced in Italy during the period of upheaval at the end of the 1960s, when artists were taking a radicalstance. Artists began attacking the values of established institutions of government, industry, and culture, and even questioning whether art as the private expression of the individual still had an ethical reason to exist. The movement is born within the so-called conceptual art in open polemic with the traditional art, of which it refuses techniques and supports to make petition, note, to material "poor" as earth, wood, iron, torn, plastics, industrial discards, with the intent to evoke the native structures of the language of the society L'arte povera e' un movimento artistico sorto in Italia intorno alla meta' degli anni sessanta tra Roma e Torino.Il movimento nasce nell'ambito della cosiddetta arte concettuale in aperta polemica con l'arte tradizionale, della quale rifiuta tecniche e supporti per fare ricorso, appunto, a materiali "poveri" come terra, legno, ferro, stracci, plastica, scarti industriali, con l'intento di evocare le strutture originarie del linguaggio della societa' contemporanea dopo averne corroso abitudini e conformismi semantici. Un'altra caratteristica del lavoro degli artisti del movimento e' il ricorso alla forma dell'installazione, come luogo della relazione tra opera e ambiente, e a quella dell'"azione" performativa.
