This late Meiji era gray silk kimono JUBAN has been hand painted in a bold presentation of a tiger with bamboo. Although viewed as dangerous tiger is a symbol of courage and strength in Japan. It is believed to be long lived and is credited with the ability to fend off demons and ill fortune including poor health. A combination of tiger and bamboo represents the weak giving shelter to the strong.
