All textures are colour coded, just use multiples of 64x64 such as 128x128 and 128x256. Lower size images often give the best results.
When using opacity maps, if you don't need fancy glass like surfaces make ssure blending is turned off to stop items disappearing when clashing with other blended items.
With a little practice you could make something as bad as the headdress below :D
