The 1920s was a time of revolution and liberation. It was the first decade to have its own nickname: the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age." Society clashed over political and social issues, cities were growing, and mass entertainment and the "consumer culture" were on the rise. Women had just won the right to vote and many were eager to express their new found feeling of female empowerment. Fashion was one place where this expression could be clearly seen.
Fashion changed profoundly during the 1920s. The younger generation cast off the Victorian past and cut their hair, ditched the corsets, raised the hemlines, lowered the necklines, and added beads, feathers, sequins, and just about anything else that wasn't restrained or sedate. They adorned themselves in both feminine flowy fabrics and sleek architectural patterns and designs. Pastel florals and Art Deco were all the rage. They embraced their appeal while defying that only curves made a woman sexy. They turned fashion on its head.
It was a time of music, a time of expression, a time of lavish parties, a time of dancing the Charleston in speakeasies until the break of dawn. It was a time of growth, a time of consumerism, a time of liberation, a time of political and social upheaval, a time of rebellion against traditional taboos. It was a cultural revolution. It was the 1920s.
