"The Execution of Lady Jane Grey" by Paul Delaroche in a cherry frame. Disturbing yet exquisite artistry of one of many deaths following the chaotic legacy of Henry VIII. Only 16 or 17 years old, Lady Jane Grey ruled only 9 days in the bloody chaos for the throne of England following the death of her cousin Edward, the sickly son of King Henry VIII. A Catholic priest (shown in the picture) was touched by the innocent purity of her Protestant beliefs, though different from his own, and kindly calmed her last moments at the chopping block.
