The great, heart-shaped Shadowmere ruby burns at your throat; the brocaded and bejewelled mask conceals your features; your heavy, silken skirts rustle as you step down from the carriage and approach the grand marble entry that will lead you to Marquess of J-----'s Venetian Masquerade. Will tonight be the night you meet your mysterious benefactor? She-- or he?-- who has restored you to your place and position, taken you from poverty to wealth?
You attempt to enter the ballroom unseen, but despite your caution, all eyes seem to be drawn to you. "Who is that?" you hear people whispering, and "Surely not the heiress of Shadowlea! I had heard her called a whey-faced child!", and, towards the end of the night, you hear someone murmur "She's like the coolness of night sky after a long and scorching day."
This black ballgown is fashioned of pure silk velvet, with flared sleeves and the wide skirts that are in these times so popular. Neckline and hem are edged with velvet ribbon, and ornamented with faux ruby stones. It includes the the Shadowmere ruby necklace that has been rumored to bear with it a dire curse.
