Satao, the world’s biggest elephant, is pictured in this sticker, with his family in the Tsavo National Park in Northern Kenya .. Photograph was taken by Mark Deeble & Victoria Stone .. Satao is dead, having been killed by poachers in may of this year .. he was celebrated as one of the last surviving great tuskers, which are bearers of genes that produce bull elephants with huge tusks reaching down to the ground .. he was killed after being shot by poachers using poisoned arrows, who follow the elephant until he drops, then cut the face off to retrieve the ivory tusks, which they sell for great profit .. there have been previous attempts on his life, where he was wounded but survived, enduring great pain .. the death of the 45 year old elephant, the latest in a surge of the giant mammals killed ( including another legendary tusker, Mountain Bull, deep inside the forests of mount. kenya) by poachers for their ivory, came a day after wildlife regulator C.I.T.E.S., which stands for, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, warned entire elephant populations are dying out in many African countries due to poaching on a massive scale .. more than 20,000 African elephants were poached last year alone for their tusks, which rake in thousands of dollars a kilo in Asia .. organized crime syndicates and rebel militia looking for ways to fund insurgencies in Africa have become increasingly involved, eager to reap the benefits as demand in China for ivory to use in decorations and in traditional medicines has fueled a multi-billion dollar illicit trade .. the world should morn the death of these great animals, slaughtered for profit, i know that i will.. main
