Poseidon's Symbols

The character of the horse comes up again and again throughout Poseidon's history. Poseidon is often depicted riding in his under-water chariot, led by horses, and thus, the horse is seen as the driving force of his power. In a famous myth, Poseidon pursues his own sister, Demeter, in a love affair. In order to capture Demeter, who has turned herself into a mare in order to escape him, Poseidon embodies a stalion. In this way, we see how the horse can act as a symbol of power, and glory. The horse can symbolize both destruction and victory, in addition to impulse, and the darker side of human qualities. This is developed in Poseidon's impulsive and adventurous personality.
