Chronos the clockwork drake
One of the earliest inventors who heralded the steampunk era was the infamous Sylvester Pemberton the third. Reclusive and eccentric beyond belief, he nevertheless developed and applied for patents on many inventions later incorporated into other designs. His invention of the "Iridium Sponge Brain" for instance, is credited with making Automatons possible.
Rumors exist that he created his own son named Adam, but if this legendary Automaton exists it has never been found. What is known is that he created a mechanical drake as a pet and companion. Named Chronos, after the greek personification of time, It is constructed of a clockwork mechanism encased in a brass alloy shell. This brass alloy is not as flexible as the alloy created by Prof Ltskin for his Newman Automaton, so riveted joints provide the extra flexibility and a brass mesh is used for the wing structure. Some of the internal gearing is visible through side ports and the fine cogwheel and chain structure used to animate the wings is remarkable in its simplicity. It is unfortunate that he did not have access to some of the power sources currently available, but the unbalanced wheel winding mechanism works perfectly. So long as you keep the drake with you your movements will rewind the power source automatically.
Although many more advanced Automatons currently exist, Chronos is surprisingly sophisticated and responds to the commands: yes, no, wave, smooch, and attack. Perched on your left shoulder he makes a wonderful companion for the adventuring hero.
