Developer's guide

Welcome developer. This is a quick guide to deriving from this mesh, with some information on the texturing patterns used and several templates aimed at making your life easier. This mesh is fully designed to be easily derived from so that you can easily make your own version of it to fit your needs, from a Sherlock Holmes hat to a "The Downliners Sect" costume.

Specifications

This hat is a derivable deerstalker, a type of hat that is typically worn in rural areas, often for hunting. Because of the hat's popular association with Sherlock Holmes, it is also a stereotypical hat of a detective. The hat features separate, mapped textures for the main portion, the side flaps and both the fore and aft brims. It also includes two opacity-mapped textures on the top, to allow for the easy addition of a lace to tie the side flaps up.

Textures

All the materials in the mesh have been assigned meaningful names to make it easier to identify them. All of the textures are mapped and non-tiling. Also, the placeholder textures that are in place are color-coded to help you in easily identify what material they belong to. Nonetheless, here's the templates for all the materials on the mesh, as well as a definition of what they are and their main characteristics. You can download the templates for the textures by right-clicking on their names and selecting "Save file as..." from the context menu. I strongly recommend you use JPG files for your textures.

Hair clipping

The hat has been meshed as close to the head as possible to avoid it looking too cartoonish or clownish. This means that it might have some clipping with some of the bulkier hairstyles. The mesh has been tested with the default male avatar hairstyle and several other hairstyles, and there is no clipping of the hair with those (meaning the hair will not show through the hat). But it might happen with bigger hairstyles. You might want to warn your customers about that in your product page.
