It's believed to be an ancient Khmer script that hasn't been used for anything other than spiritual tattoos for approximately 800 years. For the Monks who perform the tattoos, and for the Thais who normally recieve them, the tattoo would have tremendous spiritual significance. Such tattoos are thought to be powerful amulets to protect a person from harm.
