The Chu Shimada is only worn by maiko and geiko of the Gion Kobu district during April. During this month, the Miyako Odori is held. The maiko and geiko who have to perform in the group dance and in the orchestra, all have to style their own hair - or, if it is too short, wear a wig - in the Chu Shimada style.

The Chu Shimada hairstyle closely resembles the Kyoufuu Shimada style, which is worn only by geiko who perform as tencha (tea brewer) at the (Odori's) tea ceremony. The most obvious difference lies in that in the Kyoufuu Shimada the tsuto, the part in the back, is sticking out more, compared to the Chu Shimada.
