This is the skin that is worn by a maiko in sakkou stage, which are the last few weeks before she becomes a geiko. The most prominent aspect are the black painted teeth ("ohaguro"). During the Heian era, (noble) people - mostly married women - often painted their faces white, and without ohaguro their teeth would look yellow when compared to the white skin. Nowadays the custom has almost dyed out, but only during sakkou a maiko will paint her teeth black, so signify she will become a mature woman.

Shiroi means white in Japanese, and o-shiroi refers to the white makeup so distinguishable of maiko and geisha. This makeup is highlighted with red lipstick, and also red at the corners of the eyes, traditionally believed for keeping demons away, while also making a person look youthful.
