This is the skin of a second year maiko; a maiko who has had her formal debut into geisha society one or two years ago. Her upper lip is now painted as well, as she is considered a "real" member of the karyukai (geisha world). The white paint on her face still has a lot of pink in it.

Shiroi means white in Japanese, and o-shiroi refers to the white makeup so distinguishable of maiko and geisha. This makeup is highlighted with red lipstick, and also red at the corners of the eyes, traditionally believed for keeping demons away, while also making a person look more youthful.
