Authentic Scottish Highland Croft Cottage

Many thanks tae my Aunt and Uncle for taking me tae this grand cottage on my last visit tae their home in the highlands, and for their lessons on the "Old Traditions" ;). This croft cottage is made after the one I visited using most of my own personal photos. "Heather in bloom" is at its best on the high roads about South Loch Ness. Hop into the Errogie, Strathnairn area. Best time is usually from July through August! A must see, it is spectacular!

A Croft house set on the famous Loch Ness in the bonnie (beauty) and grace of the Scottish Highlands.

A true Scotsman knows that we rarely see sunny days. This is "Authentic Scotland"; my home, in its true nature. Usually dark, misty and gloomy, but just before nightfall when the mist rise, and the sun begins its rest, we see the sky in the gloaming. It is the twilight of the highlands and most Celtic/Norse regions. It is the romance of the Celts with majestic pink and yellow rays of poetry dancing across the horizons. This is our life, simple, traditional, with loyalty and honour for those who live and know this land.

Munros (mountains) in the distance, braes (hillside) filled with heather, and grass the colour only to be found in Scotland. The stone bothan (house or pub) has two large well worn rooms. Traditionally croft house are made from the stones we dig from the lands. In modern times, they are painted or white washed. Traditional heavy doors in the living quarters provide a cozy atmosphere. The front door has a welcome in the Scots Gaidhlig (Gaelic) "Failte" meaning "Welcome" Our house is our home and is depicted here in all the old traditions. The stone fireplace burns with the very distinct smell of peat logs which we harvest from the moor's (open damp lands), widely found in Scotland and Ireland. Traditional worn oak beams hold the customary thatched roof. There are worn oak floors and oak trimmed windows which frame the aged mist clouded glass. The byre (barn/stables) is sturdy and strong reinforced with more earthen stones. The hand crafted stable stalls are expertly detailed. We mix dirt, peat and some hay to give comfort to the livestock for warmth and security from the inclement elements. The long established red byre door is very much in need of replacement; however, it is a grand sturdy door, still. Off in the distance, beyond the rocks breaking the shore and across the burn (river) there is another place to travel for the tranquility in the highlands. In my home, there is a dock (can be found in the community catalogue) and a place to fish for food in the always crystal blue waters of the loch (lake) which reflects the gloaming sky. If you stay on the docks long enough, you shall see the grand mystery of Loch Ness! "Cheerio tha noo!"
