Truth? I dont know much about Asuka either, I just know of her because of the series and character popularity. Thanks to Wikipedia I can at least tell you the following!

Asuka Langley Soryu, one of the main characters from Neon Genesis Evangelion, is designated as the Second Child ("Second Children" in the Japanese versions) of the Evangelion Project and pilots the red Eva Unit 02. Her ethnic background is three-quarters German, one-quarter Japanese, and is a native of Germany; she was raised there, but her nationality is American. She is a child prodigy and has a university degree as a teenager, though it is not specified what field her degree is in. She is characterized by her fiery red hair and equally fiery temper.

My logic? The Eva head things are made from cat ears so why cant she have a tail? And since the cat things are Eva Things this is an Eva Tail *nods at her logic* My only regret on Asukas tail is that its red like her suit so where as Rei's can go with just about anything Asukas is a little more limited.
