Senryou geta are often worn by on-duty geiko, but may also be worn by off-duty maiko and basically all other women wearing kimono - though the latter is very rarely done so. Geta used to be casual footwear in Heian Japan. They were worn whenever someone went out, as they were high enough to keep a kimono from trailing on the ground, and easy to slip off when one reached ones destination. Lacquered geta are generally for summer, to stop sweat from ruining the wood.
